Moving Out – Here is What You Need to Know

Moving out of a business premises involves more than just logistics and packing boxes. It is equally important to ensure your energy account is settled correctly, so there are no unexpected energy bill surprises. Whether you are expanding your business or just relocating premises, notifying your energy supplier in advance can make the process smooth and ensure everything is in place.

How It Helps to Let Your Energy Supplier Know

Moving out of a space might feel like the end of the chapter of what you once started. Keys handed over. Checklist done. Staff briefed. Plans in place. But what about your energy account?

Your energy account needs attention, too. Notifying your energy supplier that you are moving out of your business premises, referred to as a Change of Occupier process, is essential. It assures that your energy account is closed properly and your final bill is accurate.

What Happens If You Do Not Notify

Neglecting to inform your commercial energy provider means continuing to pay for the energy bills the new occupier is consuming. Your final bill could be estimated if you fail to provide actual meter reads. This might also delay refunds or credits, adding extra hassle for you and your energy supplier as well.

Details You Will Be Asked to Provide

Making a change of occupier request demands some important information and supporting documents. Make sure you have these details ready to provide, which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Your Moving Date
  • Your Business Details
  • Final Meter Reads
  • Lease Surrender or Lease Termination (Certified)
  • New Occupier’s Details (if known)
  • Forwarding Address (including any new email or contact number)
  • Details of the landlord (if a rented property)

When to Contact Your Energy Supplier

Ideally, it is better to inform your energy supplier as soon as possible once you decide to move out and have officially signed a lease termination.

Move forward with peace of mind, knowing your energy account is taken care of and your business move is hassle-free.
