What to Do in a Gas or Electricity Emergency?

Emergencies can be stressful, but knowing what to do helps you stay calm and safe. Here’s a simple guide on handling gas or electricity emergencies. Keep this handy; it could make all the difference!

Gas Emergency? Take These Steps

Smelling gas or suspecting a leak? Act fast but stay calm. Here is what to do:

  • Open all doors and windows to ventilate your home.
  • Turn off the gas supply. You will find the shut-off valve near your meter.
  • Call the National Grid on 0800 111 999 straight away.
  • Locate the isolation switch and get outside safely. While you are at it, warn your neighbours too.
  • Avoid electrical switches or gadgets. No light switches or mobile phones – they can spark a fire.
  • Stay away from matches or any form of naked flame.
  • Don’t go back in until you’re told it’s safe.

Knowing these steps can save lives. Follow them immediately if you notice a problem.

Electricity Emergency? Here’s What To Do

Power cuts can be frustrating, but there is help available. If your electricity is out for more than a few hours, here is how to handle it:

  1. First, check your trip switch. Is everything OK there? Faulty appliances or wiring could be the culprits.
  2. Check with your neighbours. Are they in the dark too? If so, there is likely an issue with the local network.

If you are sure it is not a personal electrical issue, contact your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) at 105. This number connects you to your local electricity supplier.

Unsure which DNO is yours? Check your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number). The first two digits indicate your GSP (Grid Supply Point) area.
