Smart Meter Explained: Busting Common Misconceptions

The journey to achieving net zero by 2050 starts with building a more dynamic and flexible energy industry. Smart meters may seem like a minor upgrade, but they play a bigger role in decarbonising the sector and organisations to lead the mission by making their operation smarter and sustainable.

As of March 2025, the UK’s journey towards digital energy infrastructure has reached a remarkable milestone. Around 39 million smart and advanced meters are installed in homes and small businesses across Great Britain, of which 35 million meters are fully functional.

A Closer Look at a Smart Meter

A smart meter is an advanced electronic device installed to track energy consumption. Unlike traditional meters, which rely on manual meter reads, smart meters send your consumption data automatically to your energy supplier. This eliminates the need to provide manual meter reads and ensures you get accurate energy bills.

There are currently two categories of smart meters used for non-domestic purposes, namely the Advanced/Automated Meter Reading (AMR) Meter and the Smart Metering Equipment Technical Specifications (SMETS) Meter. While both meters monitor energy usage, however, the difference lies in the data they share. AMR Meter mainly focuses on how much you consume, whereas SMETS Meter offers additional details like tariff information for better understanding.

How Smart Meter Benefits Your Business?

Smart meters are modernising the way energy is managed across the UK and driving a significant shift in energy evolution. They are helping consumers move towards greater accuracy and transparent billing, and most importantly, bring peace of mind.

  • No more jotting down numbers or remembering the dates. Smart meter takes care of your meter readings, automatically sending them to your energy supplier. This simply takes out the hassle of sending meter reads manually.
  • By providing detailed real-time insights into your energy consumption, a smart meter empowers you to take charge of your energy management. This accurate level of insight helps you to monitor energy usage and control energy costs effectively, driving energy efficiency.
  • Being aware of how much energy you are consuming, you naturally become mindful of your habits. The real-time insights into energy usage push you to optimise use and make eco-friendly choices. This not only lowers your business environmental footprint but also keeps your energy bills in check.

Debunking Common Myths and Misconceptions

Though smart meters are driving meaningful transformation in how we consume and monitor energy yet many misconceptions still swirl around them. Let us pull back the curtain and reveal what’s actually true.

  • Manual Readings are Still Required with Smart Meter?

Gone are the days of sending meter reads manually. Smart meters are designed to make life easier and energy management simpler. They send meter reads automatically to your commercial energy provider, taking out the hassle and keeping your bills accurate.

Even if there is a power outage, the smart meter reconnects on its own and starts sending data to the energy supplier. Only in rare cases, you may send manual readings, like if you don’t have a smart meter installed or if there’s any error in the systematic readings due to power outages. But as said, very rarely!

  • Installing a Smart Meter Does Not Save Money

Well, it is true if we say that a smart meter won’t magically shrink your energy bills, but it surely helps you to monitor and optimise your energy usage. Think of a smart meter as your energy guide. It helps you take charge of your energy usage, make smart choices, and adopt eco-friendly habits.

So, while the smart meter does save you money directly, it also provides you with ways to do it.

  • Smart Meter can Compromise Personal Information Privacy

This is a common misconception, but that’s not how smart meters work. They do not hold any personal information regarding you or your business, and operate through a highly secure network, entirely separate from public internet networks.

The only information they collect is your energy consumption. All your data is fully secured in compliance with government Data Protection laws.

Smart meters are more than an advanced tool; they are an innovative step towards a green and energy-efficient future.
